Rodale Partners with Glam Media

first_imgThe partnership model forms the basis of Glam’s online strategy. It relies on vetted content publishers—bloggers and other, more “traditional” sources of content—to populate its women-oriented vertical channels in fashion, entertainment, family, and shopping, among others. Collectively, the channels attract 43 million monthly U.S. uniques, according to comScore, and 9.6 million for the Health channel alone. For the publisher, the deal is one born of syndication, where the content is shared with sites that provide access to a like-minded and, hopefully, statistically significant demo. It’s a strategy that has worked well for Rodale. In July, Jim Berra, SVP and GM of Rodale Interactive, told Circulation Management magazine that syndication tactics have contributed to more than 70 percent growth in monthly uniques. In this case, Rodale gets in-line and related link-backs, brand attributions and a revenue share on ads served up on Prevention or Women’s Health content pages.Going forward, Wasserman will see if the traffic will drive page views, conversions or both. “We’ll put direct marketing speak into the content in the in-line links and see what works,” she said. “If they end up driving subscriptions and sales of related products we’ll keep that going. If they’re driving lots of page views back to us we’ll optimize accordingly. With some partners we drive tons of traffic and a combination of magazine subscriptions and books, and other partners it’s just traffic.”As for audience, Prevention and Women’s Health target an18-49 year-old age bracket, broad enough to accommodate the demos that Glam provides on its health channel. “We talk to 18-49 year-olds. We know that’s a broad demo but the interest in living a healthy lifestyle has a stake in that range,” Wasserman said. “We recognized from some of the data that [Glam] gave us that there’s a huge interest amongst the Glam audience for more specific information around active healthy living content.” Rodale has become the latest major publisher to partner with online content network Glam Media. Women’s Health and Prevention will contribute branded articles, slide shows, and video to Glam’s new Health channel, which attracts 9.6 million unique visitors a month.“We started conversations with them about 8 months ago,” said Valerie Wasserman, vice president, strategic alliances at Rodale Interactive. “We talked to them about the types of content and programming experiences that they felt they would need in order to fill in some white space. The categories we will populate will be diet, fitness, nutrition and weight loss primarily.”RELATED VIDEO: Q+A with Glam’s Samir Aroralast_img read more

New Zealand NASA to initiate next space revolution designed by Rocket Lab

first_imgNASA is all set to launch the next revolution in space something that was long its special preserve. The launch will take place from a paddock in New Zealand’s remote South Island. The rocket-launch range is not just New Zealand’s first of any kind, but also the world’s first private launch range. Designed by “Rocket Lab”, which is one of a growing number of businesses targeting to reduce the cost of space travel, the rocket will be powered by a 3D-printed engine — another first. The 16-metre carbon-cased rocket, being assembled in a small hangar near Auckland Airport, will weight 1,190 kilograms. With fuel and payload, the rocket will be about one-third the weight of SpaceX’s Falcon 1 — the first privately-developed launch vehicle to go into orbit in 2008.”One advantage of New Zealand being this little island nation in the middle of nowhere is that’s the perfect place to launch a rocket,” said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab’s CEO.Ships and planes need re-routing every time a rocket is launched, which limits opportunities in crowded US skies. However, New Zealand, with 4 million people, has only Antarctica to its south.Rocket Lab, part-funded by Lockheed Martin Corp, is aiming for up to one launch a week from around 2018, costing under $5 million each. The cost will be one-10th of typical launch prices now, and vastly increase business access to space.Even NASA, struggling to shift its launch backlog, this month awarded Rocket Lab and rivals Firefly Space Systems and Virgin Galactic contracts totaling $17.1 million to launch tiny satellites into orbit from 2017.In a bid to win Google’s $20 million Lunar X prize for the first company to send a probe that broadcasts images from the moon, Rocket Lab recently signed a deal with Silicon Valley-based Moon Express for sending a rocket to the moon in 2017.Moon Express has already contracted for five launches with Rocket Lab, and plans to send robotic spacecraft continually to the moon for exploration and commercial development of natural resources such as platinum.New launch companies will depend on burgeoning small-satellite industries, as players like Google, Virgin and Samsung plan satellite constellations to carry communications infrastructure and gather data from low-earth orbit.”We’re not about building a rocket; we’re about enabling the small-satellite revolution,” said Rocket Lab’s Beck. One Web, Samsung and SpaceX are planning three separate Internet broadband ventures to provide low-cost Internet from the Himalayas to the Sahara desert. These alone will require 6,000 new satellites in the next four years, Rocket Lab predicts. The Satellite Industry Association says over 200 satellites were launched in 2014, nearly double the previous year.”The market can’t sustain that many; there’s going to be a thinning out of the herd,” said Daniel Lim, vice-president of disruptive innovations at space services provider TriSept Corporation. He is one among many that believe there will not be enough demand to support the increasing numbers of launch companies.Others say launch costs are still too high at around $5 million, when for $40,000 companies can rideshare on a larger rocket to launch a nano-satellite.But space startups have been proving popular with investors. The largest 100 new space companies received more than $2 billion investment in 2015, around four times more than in 2009, according to data from New Space Global. That is still dwarfed by NASA’s $17.6 billion budget last year, but many say small companies offer options and a risk appetite that government agencies cannot.last_img read more

TikTok returns to Play Store and App Store with more safety features

first_imgTikTok, which allows users to create and share short videos with special effects, has become hugely popular in India.ReutersTikTok, short-video application, has returned to App store and Play Store with more security features after getting a ban in India over obscene content. Madras High Court has lifted a stay on downloads of the popular Chinese app which is owned by the Chinese tech giant, Byte Dance Technology Co.This time, the social media app is more focused on online safety and the safety of the user in general. The app has also announced that it will launch a second in-app quiz in India to provide account safety tips to users. First safety quiz was launched on 5 February while celebrating Safer Internet Day and the company started a #SafeHumSafeInternet campaign. TikTok claims that the campaign was successful and almost 5 million users were interested in knowing about their safety IQ.TikTok has also added some new features like a revamped notification tab, new notification controls, and a device management tool to get rid of hackers. In March, TikTok also launched the localized Safety Center in India, which helps users to make their account safe and over a range of topics.TikTok has released a press note and said to the audience, “TikTok is committed to helping make its millions of users feel safe and comfortable within the community, which is why it is continuously enhancing and updating its policies, tools, and resources to promote a positive and safe app environment.”As per the report published by Reuters, Byte Dance was facing a loss of $500,000 per day due to the ban of TikTok in India and had put more than 250 jobs at risk. According to Sensor Tower, TikTok has been downloaded by nearly 300 million users so far in India, while it more than 1 billion downloads globally and it is available in 150 markets across the globe through the App Store and Google Play.Earlier this month, a court in Tamil Nadu had asked the government to ban TikTok over the issue of encouraging pornography and made child users vulnerable to sexual predators. After that, the government has sent a letter to Apple and Google for removal of the short-video application.last_img read more

AntiTrump protesters in March for Truth

first_imgActivists carrying placards with political points of view march to City Hall through downtown Los Angeles, California. Photo: AFPSharp political passions over President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord and his links to Russia brought people onto the streets of cities around the globe on Saturday, mostly to condemn but some to praise him. They came as Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, ended days of confusion to make clear that “President Trump believes the climate is changing” and that man-made pollutants are partly responsible. She insisted in a CNN interview that Trump, who has often called global warming a “hoax,” was concerned about the changing climate. “Just because the US got out of a club doesn’t mean we aren’t going to care about the environment,” she said. But Trump’s decision Thursday to pull out of the Paris treaty, which is designed to cut harmful emissions and slow the Earth’s warming, sparked a wave of global condemnation and helped fuel some of the many protest marches on Saturday. The largest of the many US rallies organized as a March for Truth appeared to be in New York, where as many as 3,000 anti-Trump protesters descended on Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, with some shouting “Liar!” or “Lock him up!” or “Take back America!”Nearly as many people converged around the Washington Monument in the US capital to similarly demand a full and independent investigation of the allegations that Trump or his aides might have colluded with Russia ahead of last year’s US presidential election to help Trump win.To ‘raise our voices’“The president works for the American people, and not for a foreign entity around the world,” said Linda Sarsour, an organizer of the march and a co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington in January.Added Savannah Stark, a 22-year-old from Ohio, “We need to keep working hard and raise our voices until he’s impeached.”Other rallies were held in cities from Portland, Oregon on the US West Coast to Munich, Germany and Lima, Peru. Demonstrators also demanded that Trump release his tax returns, a tradition among US presidents which Trump has steadfastly refused to follow. The US demonstrations appeared to be mostly peaceful. They were far smaller than some of the earlier anti-Trump protests. They took place just days before the highly anticipated appearance June 8 before a Senate committee of James Comey, who as FBI director was leading an investigation of the Russia matter before Trump fired him early in May.Trump has denied placing pressure on Comey or the FBI, as well as denying any collusion with Russia.Former FBI chief Robert Mueller has been named as a special counsel to investigate any links between Russia and the Trump campaign.“We want to get to the bottom of this,” Leon Chen, a 32-year-old Texan and self-described Republican taking part in the Washington march, told AFP. “It’s not only Russia, it’s also his business ties, how him and his family are profiting from this presidency.”Treaty ‘cost us billions’At the same time as the other rallies Saturday, a few hundred Trump supporters gathered on the street in front of the White House to applaud the president’s withdrawal from the Paris treaty—a move criticized around the world—and to demonstrate their backing for the Republican president. That rally was dubbed “Pittsburgh, Not Paris”—a reference to the president’s statement Thursday, in announcing his plan to withdraw from the international climate treaty, that “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”The Trump supporters included Vince Harrison, 56, a burly retired firefighter from Washington, who said it was his first rally ever.“I believe in clean air, and I think Americans will still lead on clean air,” he said. But he added that the treaty “was costing us billions to be in it while other countries were not required to do anything.”Treaty supporters note that it is actually non-binding—no country was required to do anything—but the presence of the United States, the second-largest polluter after China, was considered vital.Several people at the pro-Trump rally said they were unconcerned that exiting the treaty would leave the United States in the company of the only two countries that are not signatories: Nicaragua and Syria. And some said other issues mattered more to them than the climate pact—starting with building a wall on the Mexican border.A sign at a nearby rally held as a counter to the “Pittsburgh, Not Paris” rally correctly noted that “Pittsburgh’s Mayor Supports the Paris Accord.”In fact, Mayor Bill Peduto on Friday joined the mayors of some 175 other US cities and the governors of several states in announcing that his city would follow the terms of the Paris treaty.Pittsburgh, once known not just as a powerhouse steel producer but as one of the most polluted cities in the country, will work to convert its city vehicle fleet to hybrid and electric vehicles and to make its buildings more energy-efficient, said Peduto. He was to address a pro-Paris rally Saturday in Pittsburgh.last_img read more

Amazon Touts 34 Million Fire TV Users Topping Roku

first_imgHowever, the two companies announced an agreement last month, which will result in the launch of an official YouTube app as well as apps for YouTube TV and YouTube Kids to the platform in the coming months. Amazon’s Fire TV platform has more active users than Roku’s smart TV platform, the e-commerce giant claimed Wednesday. Across all of its devices, Fire TV now has 34 million monthly active users, according to Amazon. That’s about 5 million more that Roku, which ended Q1 of 2019 with 29.1 million monthly active accounts. The company also claimed that Fire TV remained the “#1 streaming media player family in the US, UK, Germany, India, and Japan.”Fire TV had been benefitting from its close integration with Amazon’s Prime Video service, as well as its Alexa voice assistant. Each and every Fire TV device now ships with a voice remote with direct access to Alexa, and the company also began exploring far-field voice control for TV with the Fire TV Cube. One sore spot for Fire TV users has been the integration of YouTube, which Amazon was forced to load with a TV-optimized browser after Google blocked a YouTube app on the device. Digital media linked to depression in young adults

first_imgIncreased use of digital media may be partly responsible for the growth in the percentage of young adults experiencing certain types of mental health disorders in the US over the past decade, suggests new research. “More US adolescents and young adults in the late 2010s, versus the mid-2000s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression or suicidal thoughts, and more attempted suicide,” said lead study author Jean Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University in the US. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across all ages,” Twenge added. For the study, the researchers analysed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a nationally representative survey that has tracked drug and alcohol use, mental health and other health-related issues in individuals aged 12 and over in the US since 1971. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveThey looked at survey responses from more than 200,000 adolescents aged 12 to 17 from 2005 to 2017, and almost 400,000 adults aged 18 and over from 2008 to 2017. The rate of individuals reporting symptoms consistent with major depression in the last 12 months increased 52 per cent in adolescents from 2005 to 2017 – from 8.7 per cent to 13.2 per cent – and 63 per cent in young adults aged 18 to 25 from 2009 to 2017 – from 8.1 per cent to 13.2 per cent, showed the findings published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. “Cultural trends in the last 10 years may have had a larger effect on mood disorders and suicide-related outcomes among younger generations compared with older generations,” said Twenge. She believes this trend may be partially due to increased use of electronic communication and digital media, which may have changed modes of social interaction enough to affect mood disorders. Moreover, research shows that young people are not sleeping as much as they did in previous generations, she noted.last_img read more
