Stojko part of skating club celebration

Elvis Stojko, a three-time world champion, two-time Olympic silver medalist, and seven-time Canadian champion, is coming to Norfolk County. His visit is part of the Waterford Tricenturena Skating Club’s 50th Anniversary celebration April 6 at Talbot Gardens in Simcoe.Stojko, who hails from Newmarket, looks forward to getting back to the grassroots of skating.“I enjoy doing the shows, I love connecting with the kids and the locals,” Stojko said in a telephone interview on Friday. “I’m excited to be coming out and skating, it’ll be fun.”The popular figure skater said his favourite part of community events is being able to perform and connect with the audience because it makes all of the hard work worth it to hear the crowd cheering.Stojko and his wife, figure skater Gladys Orozco, attend such events multiple times throughout the spring season. He said they have attended quite a few 50th anniversary celebrations for skating clubs this year.“It’s nice to get out connecting with the local clubs, and inspiring the kids,” said Stojko. “The kids inspire us too, really. We can see the enthusiasm they have for skating and that adds more joy to it all so it’s great.”The Olympian had a word of advice for Norfolk County children that want to get into figure skating.“If you love skating, go do it. Be a part of it. Engross yourself in it. It’s not the size of the town that you come from, but the size of the heart you have and the love you have for your sport that matters.”According to the skating club’s website, the Golden Memories 50th Anniversary Carnival will be a “walk down memory lane and skate into the future.”Tickets for the event are available online at ticketscene.ca. read more
