Oh no Company owners can get a shock from huge tax bills

NEW YORK — Amy Baxter’s business took off after she appeared on “Shark Tank” with her device that blocks pain from injections — orders flowed in and she bulked up her inventory. But after sales hit a temporary speed bump, Baxter learned there was no tax break for the merchandise she hadn’t sold yet.“I remember sitting at my parents’ house, realizing there was no way out of this,” says Baxter, a pediatric emergency physician whose company, Pain Care Labs, sells Buzzy, a device that uses a combination of cold and vibration to reduce injection discomfort. “I was going to have the worst debt of my business.”Small business owners can be devastated when upon learning they owe the government thousands, or even tens of thousands, of dollars. It can happen at any stage of a company’s life, and can be the result of poor planning or not getting advice from an experienced tax adviser. But changes in tax laws can also leave owners with unexpectedly large bills, and tax advisers warn it can happen to more companies this year because of the many unknowns about the new tax law.Baxter appeared on the TV show “Shark Tank” in 2014 with Buzzy and had her best year since starting the Atlanta-based business in 2006. She significantly increased her inventory, but sales to pharmacies didn’t take off as expected. Baxter thought she could write off the unsold inventory but learned from a fellow entrepreneur that the IRS doesn’t consider inventory to be a cost until it is sold or disposed of.“Our tax bill was so huge I had to liquidate my life insurance policy to pay it, and didn’t move the inventory until two years later,” Baxter says.Baxter ran into problems because her long-time accountant’s specialty was working with physicians, not manufacturers; without the right advice, Baxter couldn’t plan for a big tax bill.Unfamiliarity with the tax code has historically been a common problem leading to huge tax bills, and it’s one that’s likely to be more pervasive this year as owners and practitioners try to understand the new law, says Scott Berger, an accountant with Kaufman Rossin in Boca Raton, Florida. There’s still confusion in particular about a new 20 per cent deduction that’s available to some sole proprietors, partners and owners of what are called S corporations. But no matter how big their tax bills, owners need to file their returns on time and figure out how to pay their debt to the government.“Many clients say, ‘I don’t have the money and I’m not going to file.’ That’s the worst scenario,” says Berger. The penalties for not filing can run as high as 25 per cent of unpaid taxes.Predicting how strong business is going to be over the course of a year can be difficult, and owners who aren’t proactive about setting aside money for taxes can get quite a shock. Bobby Kittleberger was taken by surprise by how well his online magazine, Guitar Chalk, did in 2017 after breaking even in 2016.“We made a ton of money late in the year but also didn’t manage well enough to pay the IRS,” Kittleberger says. One problem: He hadn’t hired an accountant who could have talked to him about planning.“I honestly did not know what to expect,” he says.Kittleberger ended up owing the government $20,000 and had to get an installment payment plan with the IRS. He finished paying off the bill in January.Keeping good financial records is another way to help avoid a tax crisis, says Miguel Farra, a tax attorney and accountant with MBAF in Miami.“Good books and records are like a dashboard on your car. You need to know how fast you’re driving and how much gas you have and whether you’re overheating,” Farra says.Startup owners can run into tax problems because they’re trying to save money. Many try to handle tax planning and returns themselves but don’t understand the complexities of tax laws. Those owners are in danger of spending more than they save, Farra says. If owners underpay their taxes or need an installment payment plan, they’ll have interest and penalty charges that may cost more than a tax adviser’s fees. Some owners hire bookkeepers or accountants based on one person’s recommendation and find out the hard way they’re dealing with inexperience or incompetence. When Phil La Duke started a consulting business in 1992, he hired a bookkeeper at a colleague’s suggestion, and trusted her to make his quarterly estimated tax payments and compile his return. But she disagreed with the amount he wanted to pay the government and, when it came to tax filing season, became uncommunicative. When he got his return, La Duke discovered he owed the government $10,000.“I trusted her blindly, based on a recommendation,” La Duke says. “I could have asked her for references, but I didn’t.”La Duke was able to set up a payment plan with the IRS and got his tax bill reduced because of mistakes the bookkeeper had made. But it took him two years to pay the government back, and La Duke felt so traumatized he closed his business and went back to work full time. It took him 20 years before he felt secure enough to start another consulting firm._____For more small business news, insights and inspiration, sign up for our free weekly newsletter here: Joyce Rosenberg at Her work can be found here: https://apnews.comJoyce M. Alston Mitchell fueling Ohio State womens basketball in NCAA Tournament

OSU won, 90-80, behind Alston’s 28 points.Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsThe Ohio State women’s basketball team has an NCAA Tournament win under its belt, and perhaps the two best guards in the nation. At least that’s what junior Ameryst Alston and freshman Kelsey Mitchell are in the eyes of coach Kevin McGuff.“With (Kelsey) and Am at the one and two, in my opinion, we have the best backcourt in the country,” McGuff said before the Buckeyes played James Madison on Saturday. The duo, who combined for 51 points in OSU’s 90-80 take down of the Dukes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., were both still in high school the last time OSU played on this stage in 2012.Alston and Mitchell led a Buckeye team of just eight active roster members, none of whom had played on the biggest stage of college basketball before. But that all changed when the Buckeyes picked up their first tournament win since 2011.At the start of the season, an NCAA Tournament appearance was not necessarily the first thing on the Buckeyes’ mind. Rather, it was to work as hard as they could and to see where it would lead them, Mitchell said.“Coming into the season, it was never a thought that I had,” Mitchell said. “But I knew our team would work as hard as they could and anything would be possible.”OSU enters the tournament’s second round having won 13 of its last 16 games after starting the season 11-7.“We have come so far,” junior guard Cait Craft said. “Looking back at how we played then compared to how we play now makes it so exciting and very encouraging.”Like Craft, Alston said she agrees that this team continues to improve and has potential for a bright future ahead.“I always thought we had a great chance at it,” Alston said. “Like (Cait) said, we spent a while trying to find ourselves. Even at this point, I still think we’re getting better and better. When everybody is playing together, it makes it a lot more fun and exciting.”OSU freshman guard Kelsey Mitchell (3) dribbles past James Madison junior guard Angela Mickens (32) during a NCAA Tournament first-round game on March 21 in Chapel Hill, N.C.. OSU won, 90-80.Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsNow with one win in the books, the Buckeyes are set to take on North Carolina on the Tar Heels’ home court on Monday.“It is tough to have to be the opposing team and have to play somebody on their home court,” McGuff said. “It is hard, but it may help to be the underdog.”Despite playing in Chapel Hill, N.C., once again, the Buckeyes are not worried about the team they face but rather focusing on what they can control, Mitchell said.“It doesn’t matter who you play,” she said. “We have to play everybody so it is what it is. We know that every team is a great team, so we need to take it one step at a time.”No matter the team or the circumstance, McGuff said he believes his team will be ready to play at the highest level possible.“I feel good about how we are playing,” McGuff said. “The biggest thing is how you are playing this time of year. I have a lot of confidence in our players and how we are playing.”OSU is set to take the floor against the Tar Heels at 6:30 p.m. read more

Ponydance Sexy fun irreverent heres why you need to see these dancers

first_imgIF CONTEMPORARY DANCE seems like something you just don’t ‘get’, then consider this advice from dancer Leonie Pony: when you’re at a dance show, pretend you’re in an art gallery. She’s the artistic director of Ponydance, a dance troupe who fuse elements of cabaret, clowning, theatre, and music to create shows that are almost impossible to describe. In fact, that’s just how Ponydance want it, so that the audience goes with no real idea of what to expect. And really, that ties into Leonie’s art gallery comment – the audience is free to get what they want out of the show.Dublin Dance FestivalThis coming week, Ponydance will bring their latest work, Ponies Don’t Play Football, to the Dublin Dance Festival. The festival has been running for a decade, and in this landmark year is bring a varied range of shows to stages around the capital. If you thought that a dance show wasn’t for you, or are a little confused about what to expect, we spoke to Leonie, and Peter Daly from the show Swing, about how their shows break the mould.Who are Ponydance?“It looks chaotic and we look like we don’t know what’s going on, but we do know what’s going on,” laughs Leonie when speaking about Ponydance’s show.“Sometimes dance is the least most important bit.”For Ponies Don’t Play Football, Ponydance are working with Belfast band Uncle Social. It’s a marriage of creative minds, with Leonie saying the band were “so game, so sporting” about taking part. Why they dancePonydance had a budget for a four-man show. “We had an 11 man show in the end,” shrugs Leonie. “Financially, as a business model Ponydance is a farce.”But, of course, finances are not why they dance. Why bring a band on board for the show? “I’m years trying to make a show with a live band. Live music connects with people so much,” explained Leonie. After working with Uncle Social, she knew they were the ones. “I can’t really afford you – but let’s do it anyway,” she told. “It didn’t make any financial sense but it made loads of artistic sense.”Having a live band made things easier in some ways. “There was like an instant gratification, music wise,” said Leonie. She describes the show as “a number of short pieces that run into each other… it’s like a cabaret without an MC. It is very clown-like”.The dance, she explains, makes up the substance to carry the clown material. There’s some nudity and pop culture references, and Ponydance take the notice of a fourth wall and smash it to smithereens.“We change on stage, everything is on stage. It’s the set-up of a rock gig with the feel of dance gig,” described Leonie. Source: Dublin Dance Festival/YouTubeThe title, Ponies Don’t Play Football, is a reference to sport, and people’s obsession with it. “The sense of competition and sense of human achievement” fascinates Leonie, just as the human endurance of athletes fascinates her too. When Leonie is at shows, she tries to see everything that’s going on in the wings, and onstage:The moment that a techie walks across and changes the set – they’re the really real moments.Having a live audience “is the most important part of performing”. “I’m conscious that people have spent money and given up time and want to give them a good time.”To Leonie, a good show “reminds us of humanity, of what it is to be human, to feel better about the place in general”.It’s not mindless feel-good, it’s subversive in how it rejoices in humanity, and it’s a hell of a show. Source: Kilkenny Arts Festival/YouTubeWhat advice does she give to someone going to a Ponydance show?Sit in the front row – and risk it for a biscuit. If you already like theatre, live music and comedy, come to our show.If you’re watching any dance show, Leonie’s advice is to pretend you’re in an art gallery. Don’t expect there to be a narrative, or story arc. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about immersing yourself in the show and seeing where it takes you.Absorb and view the piece. Watch the dancers breathe and sweat. And just enjoy.Swing Source: Patrick RedmondFishamble’s show Swing is a totally different kind of show to Ponydance. It’s a show about dancing (of course), and it’s about music, but it’s about “love and not settling and feeling like an eejit”.Written by Steve Blount, Peter Daly, Gavin Kosick and Janet Moran, it’s about trying new things and thinking outside of the box. It tells the story of two people at a dance class, with the actors playing all the other characters too. After a glowing review in the New York Times, the team sat down to chat about why it had struck such a chord with people.“Our story is as anti-epic as you can possibly get, pretty much,” mused Peter Daly. “Not a huge amount happens,  not a lot moves forward, but for some reason the thing seems to work.”“The parts that we’ve written call for the actors to be very funny and outgrageous in some parts and very real in some parts.” From obnoxious characters to shy men, the men features a range of dancers of different types. The one thing they all seem to have in common is they’re there because all the questions in their wider life don’t seem to be answered. Each week they learn steps and they move a little bit forward. Source: Patrick RedmondThe two main characters are May and Joe. He has been dancing before, and is older than  May. He has had a fairly difficult enough few years in his own life, with his relationship and job breaking down.May’s boyfriend is away for three months and she tries the class while “looking for answer to something”, said Daly. The two meet and seem to click straight away. “We’re watching their relationship, watching it inch forward whatever might or might not happen between them.”Writing for the stageDaly sees himself first and foremost an actor, but relished the opportunity to try his hand at a new aspect of theatre – even if the early scenes were “turgid and awful”.Once the writers stopped being polite with each other, things were tightened up. “The three of us were really good script editors for each other. Nothing got past the goal posts unless all three of us were happy with it,” said Daly.Even at three-quarters way through the process, he said the play was “pretty bad”. But then, thanks in part to the help of a more seasoned theatre writer, they realised that they were trying to do too much. They needed to let the audience do more work.Things started to fall into place. “We were learning on the go and it was a really useful lesson,” said Daly. Source: Patrick RedmondSwing is a good show for those who want to see a more traditional style of dance and a solid narrative.“Myself and Stevie and Janet, we are three sentimental fools,” said Daly.We set out to make something that was enthusiastic, optimistic, and hopeful…. we’re cynical aul f**kers as well. We want you to leave the theatre with a spring in your step.Swing isn’t a throwaway piece of theatre, but it’s not so deep that it’s not enjoyable, either. “We could have ended up with a piece of theatre people walk away from and never think about it again, “said Daly. But that’s not what happened. After the festival, Swing can be caught at Bewleys for three weeks, before going on a nationwide tour.Read: Father and son pull off epic Jumbotron dance display>Read: Activists and outsiders: Unsung heroes celebrated in the Dublin Fringe Festival>last_img read more

Following GMO Hearing ASA to Senate Lets Get a Bill Done

first_imgThe American Soybean Association (ASA) is calling on senators to come to the table and finalize a plan to establish a voluntary national framework for the labeling of foods containing GMOs in the wake of a hearing yesterday on Capitol Hill to examine the issues surrounding agricultural biotechnology. The hearing, before the Senate Agriculture Committee, showcased officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency—the three agencies charged with affirming the safety and market use of this technology. Additionally featured was a group of professionals at all stages in the food and farm supply chain, who talked about the impacts of biotechnology and its potential regulation on their particular industry sectors.“We’ve seen our champions emerge from both sides of the aisle in the House, and we’ve seen interest in getting a solution put in place in the Senate,” said ASA President and Texas farmer Wade Cowan. “But we can’t afford only to flirt with this concept anymore; now is the time to come to the table, to commit, and to put a national plan in place to give consumers information they want about their food, while avoiding stigmatization of the technologies that farmers need to grow more food while using fewer resources.”The plan advocated by ASA, as a part of the Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food, would establish a voluntary national standard for foods containing biotechnology, as well as those companies that wish to market their products as non-GMO.“We’ve seen Ranking Member Stabenow’s desire to move forward, we know of the fantastic work already put in by Sen. Hoeven, and we hope that we can gather all these parties together to find a solution before the calendar flips to 2016,” added Cowan. “Moreover, we absolutely echo Sen. Stabenow’s desire to tackle this issue this year with legislation that avoids a state-by-state patchwork of conflicting legislation. We have no interest in continuing this staggered, piecemeal fight. We’re invested in finding a long-term fix that gives consumers what they need and keeps this safe technology available and unencumbered for future use.”last_img read more

Houston Bars Dont See Huge Revenue Bump During Rockets Playoff Games

first_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Florian MartinEddie Juarez at King’s Court Bar and Kitchen in EaDo expects an increase in patrons during the Rockets’ playoff games. But on average, Houston bars saw only a modest revenue increase during last year’s NBA playoffs. The Houston Rockets take on the Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday in Game 2 of their first round NBA playoff series. In East Downtown, across the street from the Houston Dynamo stadium, King’s Court Bar and Kitchen gets most of its traffic during soccer games. But not just. Assistant manager Eddie Juarez expects a bump in business during the Rockets’ playoff run. “We get a lot of foot traffic here because of seeing how the Toyota Center is just down the street,” he said. “It’s a good place for people to come before the game and after the game.” X But this doesn’t apply to the average Houston bar.According to business data firm Womply, the impact of having an NBA team in the playoffs didn’t help Houston bars very much last year.“Relative to what we saw nationally, there was either a lower increase in revenue or actually a decrease in some cases,” Womply’s Brad Plothow said.Houston bars and lounges saw a 3 percent increase on game days and a 10 percent decrease on non-game days in the 2017 playoffs. That compares to an average of 25 percent increase on game days in other playoff cities.Granted, the Rockets were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals last year.Bars’ revenue increased in every round, so with the Rockets having the best record in the NBA and expected to go far, it may look better for Houston this year.center_img 00:00 /00:47 Listen Sharelast_img read more

Flood Control Funding To Reach Harris County In 30 Days

first_img Listen X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Andrew SchneiderSenator John Cornyn leads a Harvey recovery roundtable at Thompson Intermediate School (From left to right: Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Congressman Pete Olson, Cornyn, Congressman John Culberson)It’s been two weeks since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced nearly $5 billion would be coming to Texas to pay for flood mitigation projects. The money will reach Harris County in about 30 days, according to Senator John Cornyn and members of the Houston congressional delegation.Nearly $4 billion will go towards a coastal spine to protect the region from a storm surge. Cornyn described that as a down payment on a construction project that some experts say could cost more than $12 billion. “But we’re looking forward to continuing to work with local leaders, because we don’t want this dictated from Washington, DC. We want it to come from the bottom up,” Cornyn said.Congressman John Culberson emphasized that the money would cover work on other projects as well. “There’s enough money here to complete every federally authorized flood control project in Harris County at full federal expense,” Culberson said.Congressman Pete Olson also attended the announcement. The project will also generate 141 temporary jobs. Managing company Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) says the money will be their investment and consist of a new runway parallel to the current runway 12L-30r to not only improve infrastructure, but also improve operational capacity. ASUR has submitted their Environmental Impact Statement for project evaluation by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources. Once approved, the project will consist of 3,500 linear meters of new runway that will be 45 meters wide, adding a second track. This addition will make it possible for the airport to increase its operative capacity for takoffs and landings, regardless of direction. It will also reduce runway wait time.last_img read more

Panama takes the reigns of the Central American Integration System

first_imgFinancial transparency and creating a unified approach to anti-drug policy dominated discussion on Thursday at the 41st Central American Integration System (SICA) summit in San José, Costa Rica.Presidents from across the region met at the Hotel Real InterContinental, in Escazú, southwest of the capital, as Costa Rica handed over the reigns to Panama after a six-month term as president pro tempore of the regional integration organization.Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla said she is pleased with her country’s accomplishments during its presidency and felt that SICA was a stronger system for them.Chinchilla listed adding the Dominican Republic as a full member of SICA, making power-sharing more equitable within the system, and strengthening regional security and gender violence laws among Costa Rica’s accomplishments.“Integration is not an end in itself, but rather a dynamic for economic development,” Chinchilla concluded in her remarks.Costa Rica’s presidency focused mainly on internal reforms to SICA, especially improving financial transparency. Costa Rican Foreign Minister Ernesto Castillo told reporters Thursday afternoon that the disparate organizations within SICA complicate reporting funds.“No one knows how much money SICA has,” Castillo told reporters earlier, according to minister noted that reforms signed during the last two days of meetings would include more auditing of system funds, but stressed that no one was currently under investigation for any kind of impropriety.Alongside financial reforms, security played a key role at the meeting as leaders discussed cracking down on the illegal flow of drugs through the region while loosening border restrictions for individuals and services.Public Security Minister Mario Zamora argued for the need to unify criminal codes across the region regarding drug-related crime, adding that the isthmus’ varying sentences contribute to impunity. The minister highlighted SICA’s cooperation as a way to explore draft legislation to bring members states into greater alignment on the issue.Zamora called Central America the most dangerous region in the world because of illicit drug trafficking.Panama and Costa Rica already allow their citizens to travel between countries without passports. There was no mention if or when Costa Rica and Nicaragua might exchange such benefits. Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, was one of the only SICA presidents who did not attend Thursday’s summit. Costa Rica and Nicaragua remain embroiled in an international border dispute involving Isla Calera, a swampland along the northeastern Costa Rican border.News of another waterway in Nicaragua, however, also made news. The country’s $40 billion planned inter-oceanic canal ruffled feathers following a press conference given by the project’s Chinese builder, HKND Group, on Tuesday.Castillo said that Costa Rica is wary about the canal’s potential impact on the San Juan and Colorado rivers, both of which are important transit routes for the country.“We are worried that the canal will pass through Lake Nicaragua and Lake Nicaragua feeds the San Juan River, where Costa Rica holds navigation rights,” Castillo told reporters. The minister said that his country has no intention of filing any kind of complaint at the moment, considering there are no firm plans about the canal’s route and doubt over whether the “canal will be built at all.”SICA’s new leadersAccepting the president pro tempore position from Chinchilla, Panama’s President Ricardo Martinelli said that observers could look forward to more tangible reforms to the system, including greater economic and migration integration during his country’s term leading the system.“We used to speak of Central America and Panama,” Martinelli said, “this marks Panama’s full integration into Central America.”The president added that he would work to ensure SICA members benefit from the recently signed free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association.SICA also elected a new secretary general, Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez. The system’s new leader said that he would focus on SICA’S five main goals during his term: security, climate change, regional integration, fighting poverty, and strengthening democracy in the isthmus.Martínez added that he would work to expand SICA’s economic participation with other regional blocs, including the Caribbean Community, the European Union, and Asian organizations.Today’s meeting was attended by presidents Chinchilla, Martinelli, Guatemala’s Otto Pérez Molina, Mauricio Funes of El Salvador, Porfirio Lobo of Honduras and Danilo Medina Sánchez of the Dominican Republic. Vice President Moisés Omar Halleslevens Acevedo represented Nicaragua and Ambassador José Antonio Martínez, Belize.  Facebook Comments No related posts.last_img read more
