Build Your Own Car Rig for Thirty Dollars + 10 Production Tips

first_imgShooting a car scene in your next film or video project? Check out this DIY car mount build — and some tips for your scene.Mounting a camera on a car requires some creative problem-solving, and safety must always come first. Searching “grip car rigs” will yield some crazy results, but you should still check them out for inspiration. So how does one begin learning car-rig techniques without spending a fortune?Dent or glass pullers (suction cups) can solve this issue. The idea is nothing new, really, but most examples out there mainly focus on smaller camera systems. I became interested in building a car rig after I purchased my gimbal, which isn’t exactly lightweight. Previously, simply shooting out of the window or the back hatch of an SUV had been enough. Then one day I scrolled past an image of Jeremy Cai’s car-mount build on Facebook. The build was very impressive, but it looked simple enough to piece together — and it looked like it could support a camera like the FS700. Using U-bolts allowed me to rotate the handle, which offered more flexibility when attaching the mount. (Check out my build in the video below.)My gimbal also came with a drone mount, which was just gathering dust. With a very small investment, I expanded the potential of gear I already owned. So, here are some recommendations on what you should purchase to get more out of your gear — and some safety measures to protect yourself and your equipment. 1. Safety FirstYou can’t concentrate on what you’re doing while watching a monitor and driving at the same time. So, find some friends that you can rely on. Have a backup plan for each your shots (especially if you haven’t done any pre-production testing), and never put a shot before the safety of yourself or your crew. In my opinion, leave your driver alone so they can concentrate on driving — he or she will make decisions about adjusting the shooting plan, should the backup become necessary.2. The Hardware StoreIf you don’t have access to tools or materials, don’t fret: your local hardware store has a lot of options. They can usually cut material in-store and sometimes offer discounts on leftover material from pervious customers. In some instances, you can even get demonstrations of how to use a tool.3. Plan Your RoutePlan your route, know the road conditions, and have a plan to get back to the starting point. If you impede traffic in any way, you will need to get a permit, the requirements for which will vary based on your location. However, you can easily test your rig in vacant parking lots and public spaces. If you’re shooting in a parking garage, make sure your camera clears all overhead architecture.4. Prep Your SurfaceClean your surface for the suction-mount and add a thin layer of beard wax. Beard wax has a great consistency, and it improves suction without damaging your car. The wax helps create a liquid-like layer that doesn’t evaporate, which helps seal the air displacement that causes the suction.5. Be GentleDon’t press too hard while attaching your mount. If you bend the metal under the cup, you’ll only get weak suction, if any at all. A nice, even surface is more important than how hard you press (I learned this the hard way). Further, you may get different degrees of suction from each cup. While not ideal, four good suction points is usually enough. You could even purchase a dual suction cup puller and swap them out based on your rig and your mounting surface. Tow straps are also be a great addition for safety.6. Follow FocusGet a follow focus system and an HDMI transmitter. There are many options out there for both pieces of equipment. A focus system is a necessity for gimbals, and I found a very cheap prosumer HDMI transmitter for gaming. This gives you better control and improves your cinematography.7. Use Your Camera AppDoes your camera have an app? Controlling camera settings over WIFI or Bluetooth will give you even greater control over your shot without ever leaving the car.8. Use a SpotterHave a spotter for traffic. It’s unlikely that you’ll have full control over a location, so be in constant contact with your crew by using speaker phones or a walkie system. Again, if you plan to stop traffic or film any type of stunt, you will need to get a permit. Certain buildings in your area might be prohibited altogether, so do your research.9. Results May VaryNot all cars, roads, and materials will yield the same results. Don’t be discouraged if your first few attempts aren’t perfect. Keep experimenting with locations, and try out a different car.10. Higher Frame RateShoot at a higher frame rate. This will cut down motion blur and improve the results of warp stabilizer in post-production. (Check out the video below for more warp stabilizer tips — it’s going to be your best friend.) I like to begin in Premiere and then import into After Effects if I want better results. You may even want to set your own tracker.Rigging a camera mount for your car can become daunting very quickly when you look at the examples of full grip-made rigs, but hopefully this article helps pull back that curtain a bit. Perhaps you’ve got an old tripod on hand or a quick release plate that needs a new purpose. If you’re shooting a car scene, give that gear some new life.Looking for more video tutorials? How To Choose A Fire Pit

first_imgSince time immemorial, mankind has treasured the simple yet awesome power of harnessing fire in a lovely fire pit that really anchors the whole patio, providing a focal point around which to gather and discuss the amazing deal you got on the tile in the renovated bathroom’s shower. I know, right? $4.15 a square foot for such elegant matte finish porcelain!Related: Wine and Dine by the FireNah, but seriously, a fire pit is a great way to liven up an outdoor space: they look good whether alight with dancing flame or cool and at rest, they provide warmth that makes an outdoor space pleasant when there’s a chill in the air, and some fire pits can even be used for cooking. If you’re wondering how to choose the right fire pit for your home, first consider the most practical factor, which is use. Will you ever slow roast a side of ham over your pit, or is it more for looks? Then consider if you prefer a pre-fab or DIY approach. And of course you’ll have to grapple with the wood vs. gas debate. Size too is a factor. And so on.We can’t decide which fire pit is right for you, but we can share a few great options and try to spark the process for you.THE DIY FIRE PITIf you’re a handy type who takes pride in tackling a project head-on and hands-on, then you shouldn’t buy as fire pit, you should build a fire pit, mister! (The homemade fire pit is almost always of the wood burning variety, and we’re not even going to touch on a DIY gas burning pit, FYI.) You can use a variety of materials in constructing your own fire pit, from bricks to pavers to carefully selected stones, just make sure that you use firebricks on the bottom and around the inner walls of the pit (at least stacked a couple levels high within, if not all the way to the top.Start by digging out an area of dirt that is several feet wider than the finished pit will be. Dig down four or five inches, then fill this shallow depression with concrete.Once it has set, use mortar and firebricks to lay the floor of the pit, then create the first ring around the floor. You can fill in gaps with gravel and mortar (or more concrete mixed heavily with gravel).Build the pit up, and consider leaving the inner ring of firebricks (the outer ring will be more decorative, but still sturdy and fire resistant, of course) slightly lower than the outer ring, which will allow you to rest a grill over the flames if you want to cook over your pit. You can also always just stick the bowl from a charcoal grill in there…THE PROPANE PITPropane fueled fire pits are great in that they can look like a permanent fixture, but can in fact be moved around a yard (or patio or pool deck) at will, given that they’re not anchored to the ground or tied to a fixed gas line. The main drawback with this type of fire pit is that you need somewhere to put the damn propane tank. Some propane fire pits have built in fuel storage, while others will require you to run a line to a tank tucked away somewhere else. These fire pits make great tables when not in use, as most are relatively flat and often have inserts that cover their basins. A propane fire pit can produce enough warmth for those huddled close by, but they don’t send flames licking high into the air, and their flame can be hard to see when it’s not fully dark out. That said, their portability remains a huge asset.THE TABLE TOP FIRE “PIT”Ventless “table top fireplaces” burn an ethanol solution the produces no smoke and no odor, and are perfectly suitable for indoor or outdoor use. These nifty little contraptions can be perched in the middle of a table or on a dedicated stand. Grouping a few together will create the same hypnotic experience as a larger fire pit as ribbons of flame dance and twist behind thick panes of safety glass. These fireplaces produce minimal heat, but they look great, they’re affordable, and beyond occasionally filling a fuel reservoir, they’re wildly low maintenance.THE HARD LINE FIRE PITInstalling a fire pit that is hard lined to your home’s gas line takes more planning and effort than other fire pit setups, but once the thing is in place, you’ll have an instant fire at your finger tips 24/7/365. The benefits of a hard-lined fire pit include maximum potential warmth and ideal flame height control. The drawbacks include cost and effort. Chances are that you’ll have to have a professional plumbing service dig the trenches and tap into the lines, and that’s going to add hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to the project. You also have zoning and ordinance issues to worry about (if you do things by the books). But when the project is over, you’ll be the envy of the neighborhood with your nifty new ever-ready fire pit, baby. Choose a safe, sturdy fire pit, a burner that works with the gas line and valve you installed, and plan to cover the burner with stones, marbles, and/or or broken glass (for looks and to spread the gas out for even flames). Then just turn the valve, flick a lighter or strike a match, and enjoy the flames.Related: Witness the Fire Power of this Fully Armed and Operation Death Star Fire Pit The Evolution and History of the Home Stereo Smart Practices for Drinking With the Environment in Mind Editors’ Recommendations Is Calisthenics Right For You? No way to know if debt to income ratio has climbed too

first_imgOTTAWA – With a popular measure that shows Canadians’ soaring debt remains in record-breaking territory, the federal government has acknowledged internally there’s no way of knowing whether the burden has climbed too high.A recently released federal analysis, prepared for Finance Minister Bill Morneau, said the country’s household-debt-to-disposable-income ratio has been steadily rising since 1990, when it was 90 per cent. That translates to 90 cents in debt for every dollar of household disposable income. On Thursday, the latest figures showed the ratio hit 170.4 per cent in the final three months of 2017, just below its historical peak of 170. 5 per cent the previous quarter. That’s just over $1.70 in debt for every dollar of disposable income.“While the debt ratio is high historically speaking, there is no way of precisely determining whether the current ratio is too high,” said the memo, which was written last August.“There is no estimate of the exact ‘optimal’ level of household debt.”The Finance Department document, labelled “secret,” was obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.Policy-makers keep an eye on the debt ratio, which is one of several ways experts monitor household debt, in their efforts to gauge the severity — and potential fallout — of the country’s years-long borrowing binge. The Bank of Canada, for one, has carefully assessed the economic risks of consumer debt in order to determine how quickly it can raise interest rates without piling on too many debt-servicing costs for over-stretched households. The central bank has called Canadians’ debt burdens an area of top concern.Still, in response to the stronger national economy, the bank has increased its benchmark rate three times since last summer. When the economy is close to full capacity, the bank hikes its rate to keep inflation from rising above its two per cent ideal target.Even if it is uncertain where the danger zones begin for the household-debt ratio, the briefing note to Morneau said there are “clear negative consequences” for the economy if the number gets too high or too low.High household debt can lead to “deeper and more protracted recessions,” while levels too low among those who can afford it could push home-ownership rates down to sub-optimal levels, the memo said. But the document notes that static calculations about debt fail to account for many other factors that can affect the entire picture, such as policy changes aimed at slowing debt accumulation.“Ultimately, what drives the sustainability of debt is whether carrying it is affordable and whether the distribution of that debt poses any systemic financial risk,” said the memo, which was partially redacted. The main theme of the document was to explore likely economic impacts from the Bank of Canada’s current rate-hiking path. The memo presented two primary ways higher rates will affect the economy — they will make existing debt loads costlier to service and they will make interest-sensitive spending, like expenditures for cars, housing and business investment, more expensive. But given expectations the central bank will take a gradual approach to raising the rate, the briefing note said the economy is likely to steadily absorb the increases. Some analysts said the fact this week’s debt-ratio reading was slightly lower than the previous number could suggest Canada’s debt growth may have turned a corner.“That should be viewed as a positive development by the (Bank of Canada), though progress on reducing the ‘key vulnerability’ of elevated household debt will likely be very slow,” RBC economist Josh Nye wrote in a research note. For several years, policy-makers have been introducing new regulations, such as restrictions on mortgage credit, to curb the build-up of household debt.Earlier this week, Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz also said the federal government’s steps to add to the public debt in recent years has helped slow the rise in debt accumulated by Canadians.Poloz, who acknowledged household burdens have still managed to reach historic highs, said Ottawa’s spending on programs such as enhanced child benefits and infrastructure have contributed to economic growth. As a consequence, the stimulus has pushed interest rates higher than they would have been without it, he said.On the household-debt-to-disposable-income ratio, some experts see it as just one number out of many and insist that consideration must be given to the composition of the debt, such as how much of it is high risk.“It’s masking more than it’s revealing,” Benjamin Tal, CIBC’s deputy chief economist, said of the ratio.“Therefore, the fact that (Finance officials) are saying, ‘there’s no optimal level, we don’t know if it’s really very high,’ suggests that at least there is some rational thinking when it comes to this ratio, which is very refreshing.”Follow @AndyBlatchford on Twitterlast_img read more

As winter nears in Kyrgyzstan UN aid officials voice fears on living

18 November 2008United Nations humanitarian officials are voicing concern for an estimated 700,000 people in Kyrgyzstan, with many lacking decent shelter and facilities as the often bitter Central Asian winter approaches. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in Kyrgyzstan include 580,000 people classed as food insecure and 250,000 people at risk because of electricity and water shortages.Central Asian winters can be extremely harsh, particularly in the mountainous regions of southern Kyrgyzstan, which were also hit early last month by a deadly earthquake.OCHA said UN agencies and their non-governmental organization (NGO) partners are working together to complement Kyrgyz Government efforts to devise a winter response plan to ensure minimum standards of basic services throughout the winter season. The response plan requires some $18 million to be put into practice. read more

Widow struggles as 3rd Bosma suspect appears in court

(Updated) Just one day after learning of a third arrest in the murder of her husband, Tim Bosma’s widow Sharlene was in a Hamilton courtroom to see the woman accused of helping Dellen Millard and Mark Smitch. As she has for all court dates relating to the death of her husband, Sharlene Bosma was surrounded by family. But this date, the arrest of Christina Noudga, 21, as an accessory after the fact to the murder of Tim Bosma, came as a surprise to Sharlene, and brought back a lot of bad memories.“I’m not really how many more surprises we can take. I’m kind of hitting my limit on surprises right now.” “It brings you back to the beginning. And any progress that you might have made moving forward it’s just gone, it’s just gone.” Tim Bosma disappeared with two men on the night of May 6th. It is alleged that three days later Noudga helped her boyfriend Dellen Millard escape. The next day Millard was arrested. He and Mark Smich are charged with first degree murder. Yesterday Millard was also charged with the murder of his father, and he and Smich were both charged with the first degree murder of Laura Babcock. In reaction to the news Sharlene Bosma reached out to Babcock’s family.“Every case is different, and everyone reacts differently. Unfortunately we have an understanding of what that’s like.”And like she did for Millard and Smitch, Sharlene Bosma was there to face the third person accused in the crime that took her husband. Sharlene sat in court, stone-faced fighting back emotion until after it was done.“It’s mine when that happens. I don’t like sharing that publically, be it in a court room, or in Walmart or wherever. It’s mine.” An exausting task, but there are still many more to go. The trial for Millard and Smitch isn’t expected to begin until September. Bosma says she won’t look that far ahead.“I’m gonna go home, and I want to hug my child, because she has magical abilities to make some things better, and that’s where I want to go. So I’m gonna go home.” In court today Noudga was remanded in custody until her bail hearing on May 5th. read more

In The Major Leagues Female Coaches Are Barely A Rounding Error

Jen Welter has been hired by the Arizona Cardinals as an assistant coaching intern and may be the first female coach of any kind in the NFL. But her presence alone is enough to put the NFL near the top of the list among major men’s sports in terms of coaching gender balance. The share of female NBA assistant coaches is 0.5 percent, and it’s even lower in the NFL, but both are ahead of MLB and MLS’s zero percent. The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central Florida, known by the acronym of Tides, publishes an annual report card on race and gender, which notes that last year, the San Antonio Spurs hired the NBA’s first female assistant coach, Becky Hammon. The NBA also has two women working as referees, and earlier this year, the NFL hired its first female full-time official. Among the professional sports Tides tracks, women’s basketball is the only one to have any women serving as head coaches or general managers.1Tides has compiled reports on the NFL, the NBA, MLB and MLS but not the NHL. The data in this article is drawn from the most recent report available for each sport: 2015 for the NBA and MLB and 2014 for the WNBA, NFL and MLS.(Welter may or may not be the first female assistant coach in the NFL. The most recent Tides report on the NFL logged two female assistant coaches but did not identify them or their team. At the time of this writing, report author and Tides Director Richard Lapchick was out of the country and could not be reached to identify the two women who may have preceded Welter. If these women have passed unnoticed, it may be because the total count of female coaches in sports tends to look like a rounding error.)(Update, 10:30 a.m., July 30: A Tides editor said the other two women in their report had job titles that led them to be coded as assistant coaches, but appear not to have worked in that capacity. That appears to confirm that Welter is the first female assistant coach in the NFL.)Women are more likely to hold leadership roles away from the sidelines. Twenty-three percent of the WNBA’s vice presidents are women, and men’s sports aren’t far behind. WNBA202333 NBA7205 Tides lists nine women who were either principal owners or held significant ownership stakes in NFL franchises in 2014, but it does not provide data on the overall share of owners who are female. It’s hard to tell whether the larger number of women at the VP level means that women are in the hiring pipeline and could help promote others to serve as presidents and CEOs. The NFL and MLS have both nearly doubled their share of female VPs over the past 10 years, but for the other men’s sports, the proportion of female VPs has remained close to constant.Welter’s new position is great news for her and for the Arizona Cardinals, but female staff are still rare enough in men’s sports so as to be the stuff of anecdotes, not statistics. TMobile Galaxy Note will be available on August 8

first_imgThe Samsung Galaxy Note has been met with a wide variety of responses since it was first shown of at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Some feel the phone is comically large, while others feel it replaced the need for a tablet in their day-to-day lives. One thing has sounded out clearly, and that’s the desire to see the phone on other carriers. We’ve seen leaks and whispers of the phone coming to T-Mobile, and finally the company has revealed that the 5.3-inch phone will be coming to T-Mobile on August 8.The Samsung Galaxy Note%displayPrice% at %seller% isn’t quite as powerful as the Snapdragon S4 seen in T-Mobile’s HTC One S or Galaxy S3, but the 1.5GHz S3 is still no slouch. With an 8MP camera, 16GB internal storage with a microSD slot, and the HSPA+ 42Mbps-capable radio the Note will be more than competitive. WiFi calling, another staple of T-Mobile devices recently, is also available on this version of the Galaxy Note. The AT&T Galaxy Note and the T-Mobile Galaxy Note are essentially identical, the only real differences being the software included with the T-Mobile version will support T-Mobile services. T-Mobile’s “4G Pro App Pack” will be pre-installed, which includes apps like Dropbox, Evernote, and Square for those interested in productivity on the go. The T-Mobile Galaxy Note will come pre-loaded with Android 4.0.4 with Samsung TouchWiz and NFC enabled, but Google Wallet will not be accessible from the Play Store.Starting August 8, the Galaxy Note will be available for $249.99 after a $50 rebate on a new contract. Alternatively, T-Mobile will make the phone available to Equipment Installment Plan customers for $199 up front and $20 per month for 20 months. Since HSPA+ uses significantly less power than LTE, it is safe to assume that the battery life on the T-Mobile Note will be marginally better than the AT&T variant. At that rate, the Galaxy Note is still cheaper than the more powerful Galaxy S3, and offers the larger screen and stylus input.last_img read more

Game of Thrones cast tried to warn us about season 8

first_img Now playing: Watch this: Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5: Everybody hurts Target Game of Thrones Share your voice The final episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones airs Sunday. Helen Sloan/HBO Not since the Red Wedding have we heard such an outcry from Game of Thrones fans. Since the HBO series’ debut in 2011, we’ve endured bloody, tragic loss and joyous (mostly short-lived) victories as characters have battled for the Iron Throne. But the penultimate episode last Sunday received mixed reactions, with some defending Daenerys’ choices and others try to explain why fans feel so betrayed.Spoiler warning: If you haven’t watched the most recent episode of Game of Thrones, turn back now.Daenerys’ fiery attack on Kings Landing in episode 5, The Bells, left many fans shocked. A petition began circulating online a few days after the episode aired, demanding the replacement of writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and a complete overhaul of season 8. But what about the actors? A three-minute interview compilation posted on YouTube shows they might be just as concerned about the series finale as you. 6:20 Tags Ser Brienne of TarthGwendoline Christie’s character took a turn as well in the final season of the show. Brienne has been a fierce protector and trailblazer for women since her season 2 debut. As quickly as Brienne achieved her dream of being a knight, she and Jaimie made love and then he rode off to die with Cersei, leaving Brienne sobbing in the cold. “I was so upset for [Brienne],” Christie told Entertainment Weekly. “I know it’s just a character and I’m an actor who’s lucky to do her job. It’s so heartbreaking. But it’s life, isn’t it? Life is heartbreaking. I never assumed they would be together. I didn’t think that would happen. And now I can feel a million hearts breaking.” VarysSecrets finally caught up to the Master of Whisperers and he met a fiery demise at the beginning of episode 5. Conleth Hill, who plays Varys, told Entertainment Weekly he took the character’s exit “very personally.” “I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist. I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in the same position a lot more than I did at the time. You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about,” Hill said.  center_img MissandeiEmmanuel’s journey at Daenerys’ side came to an end in episode 4 at the hands of the Mountain. TV Guide noted that Missandei was the only woman of color with a significant role on Game of Thrones and her death was more than a bit upsetting for fans. “The one thing I would say is I really had wished that I had more time or scenes this season maybe with Daenerys or even with Cersei, scenes where we get to see her being brilliant before she dies,” Emmanuel told Entertainment Weekly. Emmanuel wrote a goodbye to her character and the show’s cast and crew on Instagram on May 7. “I know last night was pretty intense for some of you so I invite you to participate in my fantasy where I like to think that, right now… Missandei is sipping a rum on a beach somewhere in the sky,” she said. Jon Snow, aka Aegon TargaryenKit Harrington plays the raised-from-the-dead savior in the North, who’s now a handsome obstacle in Daenerys’ path to the throne. During an interview with Popbuzz, Harrington was asked to describe the show’s finale in one word. He pauses for a minute before saying it was “disappointing.” Harrington laughed at the interviewer’s shocked face and quickly recovered with “epic.” Daenerys Targaryen Emilia Clarke, the Mother of Dragons, posted on Instagram earlier this week in her wig cap clutching a bottle of wine. “This is what it took not only to shoot ep5…but to watch it too!” she wrote. Comments Clarke also had a bit of trouble keeping a poker face during an Emmy red carpet interview last year alongside Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) and Jacob Anderson (Grey Worn). When the Entertainment Tonight correspondent asked if the actors were happy with how the season concluded, Emmanuel quietly answered yes, while Clarke giggled nervously. The group laughed as Clarke said, “Best season ever!” Her smile contrasts to her comments in Vanity Fair last year, TV Guide reported. Clarke said that the Game of Thrones finale “f—ed me up,” and “Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…” She trailed off with that. Tyrion Lannister Peter Dinklage, who isn’t an avid social media user, was asked his thoughts about the show’s finale by Entertainment Tonight’s Laura Zima. “There are no better writers in television than Dan Weiss and David Benioff,” Dinklage said. “They ended it brilliantly, better than I could’ve imagined. And, uh, you people are in for it.” Dinklage also questioned his character’s intelligence in the final season, wondering why Tyrion would choose to hide civilians in a crypt when the Night King has the power to raise the dead. Cersei Lannister When Lena Heady, who plays everyone’s favorite brother-loving villain, talked about her character’s final moments on the show, she said she had mixed feelings. Initially, Heady told Entertainment Weekly that she wanted her character to have a bigger ending. She said later she talked the scene over with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister) and it made more sense for Cersei to go out with Jamie. Heady posted a photo on Instagram with a bundled up Emmanuel and commended her performance as Missandei. “I didn’t like that day up there,” Heady wrote, alluding to Missandei’s execution. Ship Channel Traffic Halted By Fog

first_imgwww.marinetraffic.comHouston ship channel clogged due to fog.Dense fog has temporarily halted vessel traffic on the Houston ship channel. Operations were suspended at 2:08 PM Monday afternoon according to the U.S. Coast Guard. There are more than40 ships waiting in Galveston Bay for ship traffic to resume.Chief Joergens Reno with the Coast Guard says reports are that the fog could stick around all day affecting vessels. “If it lets up in the near future, then typically it would take about a day to catch up. But if the fog sets in and it stays for a couple days, you know, obviously we’re looking at a much longer period to get these ships in and out,” he says.Matt Brock, a dispatcher for the Houston Pilots association, says visibility is bad. “Right now if you were to go into a ship, you wouldn’t be able to see the entire length of the vessel,” Brock says. He adds that fog season typically starts in November and runs through April, with intermittent closures expected during this time of year.Lisa Ashley with the Port of Houston says the delays won’t have any economic impact. The Arrowverse Gets Batwoman Supergirl Goes to the Movies More DC News

first_imgLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Things are looking up for DC. Not only does it have two hotly anticipated movies dropping in the next year (both of which look incredibly promising, by the way), but the Warner Bros.-owned comics brand continues to absolutely kill it on TV. Some of the most exciting stuff in superhero entertainment isn’t on the big screen. It’s happening with a much lower budget on The CW. The Arrowverse built out a complex and earnest comic book universe on TV. And if things go according to plan, it’s only going to expand further. This year, the Arrowverse will add another superhero to its roster: Batwoman. The producers already announced that she would be introduced during this year’s four-show crossover with an eye toward getting her a series of her own. They also said they were hoping to cast a lesbian actor, as the character Kate Kane is a gay woman herself. Entertainment Weekly reports that the universe has found its actor. Ruby Rose is joining The CW as Kate Kane this year.If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Rose is a pretty big get for the network. You’ve seen her in Orange is the New Black, Pitch Perfect III, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (the good one), and John Wick: Chapter Two. In the latter movie, she showed everyone she knows her way around a fight scene. That alone makes me want the Batwoman series to happen so bad. CW, you better not screw us out of this. And yes, Rose is gay and has spoken candidly about coming out as gender fluid. She’ll bring an authenticity to the role that’s crucial for a character like Kane, who had her military career derailed when she refused to lie about a relationship with another student. If the series gets picked up, it’ll be the first live-action TV series led by an LGBT superhero. For now, we can all hope The CW sees how much we want the show to happen. Until then, we can’t wait for our first look at Batwoman in the annual Arrowverse crossover this December.via DC ComicsWith Batwoman joining the family, it raises the question of whether we’ll ever see her more famous cousin. Her show will take place in Gotham City, after all. Batman definitely exists in the Arrowverse too, having been mentioned in both Arrow and Supergirl. If the Arrowverse adds a show that takes place in Gotham City, won’t they have to show Batman at some point. The answer, of course, is no. CinemaBlend reports that CW president Mark Pedowitz had a fairly definitive answer.“There’s no discussion about a series. Batman already exists in the Arrowverse because last season Oliver Queen mentioned his name at one point. And Batwoman, if the series goes forward, lives in Gotham. There’s no plan at this time to have Batman appear,” he said. Good. If the series does get picked up, we need to get to know Batwoman on her own terms. The last thing the show needs is a bigger name hogging the spotlight… er, bat signal. So, how do they get around having a series set in Gotham without showing Batman? Well, it’s a big city. The Dark Knight rarely shows up in Batwoman comics, so it’s possible he’s off doing his own bat-thing. Or the Arrowverse could use its multiple Earths to its advantage. Arrow, which takes place on Earth 1 only mentioned Bruce Wayne by name, and hasn’t mentioned Batman at all. Supergirl, which takes place on Earth 38, had Superman talk about a partner with “a lot of gadgets and a lot of demons.” There’s really only one hero he could be talking about. It’s possible that Batman only exists on Earth 38. Maybe in Earth 1, Bruce Wayne never donned the cape. This is just me speculating here, but it’s fun to think about.Just because there are no plans now though, doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. Especially if Batwoman is successful. If The CW ever does introduce Batman, it’ll be in a later season, possibly way down the line. Just like Supergirl waited until Season Two to have Superman show up, Batwoman is going to let Kate come into her own as a hero before letting Bruce cramp her style.Melissa Benoist in Supergirl (Photo via CW)Speaking of Supergirl, DC is planning to bring her to the big screen. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. and DC are working on a film featuring Kara Zor-El. Not much more is known at this point, other than Oren Uziel is working on the script. He’s the writer behind 22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox, and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat movies. What’s interesting is that the studio is working on this while they still haven’t committed to a proper Man of Steel sequel, despite how much Henry Cavill wants to make one.  It’s no secret that DC sees a need to transition into lighter, more fun superhero movies after the dreary Batman v. Superman and the financially disappointing Justice League. And what better way to make the Kryptonians fun than by focusing on the one hero whose been doing it on TV since 2015? DC is said to be looking for a new tone and template for Superman movies. If they can introduce that with Supergirl first, maybe the change won’t be all that jarring when Superman does return in a more lighthearted movie. Assuming they keep Cavill, maybe his cousin can teach him to loosen up a little.Sadly, we probably can’t expect Melissa Benoist to play the role on the big screen. Warner Bros. still seems intent on keeping The World of DC movies and the Arrowverse separate. They cast a new actor to play The Flash, they’ll do it again for Supergirl, wonderful as Benoist is. They’ll likely cast someone just as perfect for the role, though. Ezra Miller has a very different take on his character than Grant Gustin, but you can’t deny he IS Barry Allen, just as much as Gustin is.(Via DC Comics)What’s really exciting about DC right now is they’re realizing just how many movies their making centered on women. DC has always had particularly great superheroines and it’s cool to see them get their big screen due. One movie that keeps sounding better the more we learn about it is Birds of Prey. The Harley Quinn-centered girl gang movie will team her up with Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain. That much, we already knew. Now, we may know who the villain will be.The Wrap reports that Birds of Prey will send Harley Quinn’s gang up against Black Mask. Often a Batman rogue, Black Mask is a sadistic mob kingpin who’s obsessed with masks. In the comics, he murdered his parents to take control of their company, but went bankrupt because patricide isn’t sufficient preparation for running a business. He blames Wayne enterprises for his failures though, and starts his own criminal gang. His story will probably be tweaked for Birds of Prey, but the villain is a perfect fit for this movie. Margot Robbie has described it as a crime flick. The titular birds aren’t always on the right side of the law. Sending them up against an entitled rich guy with a sadistic streak just sounds appropriate. There Is Now a Global Competitive Drone Racing League Seriously

first_img Nerds rejoice! This is your moment, your paradise. This is the stuff that your wildest dreams are made of.There is now a competitive drone racing league. It’s like competitive, real-life video gaming. With drones. The New York City-based Drone Racing League (DRL) launched today and will kick off with six events in 2016 throughout the world. The first event will be in Miami on Feb. 22 and the second will be in Los Angeles in mid-March. Locations haven’t been finalized for the remaining four events, but locations under consideration include Detroit; Auckland, New Zealand; and Mexico City. Drone pilots wear goggles that show a live video feed from the perspective of the drone they are controlling. All pilots race the same, custom racing drone called the DRL Racer 2, which can go as fast as 80 miles per hour.“We’re committed to building the best drones, most inspiring courses and creating the ultimate proving ground for the world’s greatest drone pilots,” says Nicholas Horbaczewski, the founder and CEO of DRL, in a statement announcing the new league.Related: Crowdfunding Platforms Need to Be Better Watchdogs, Says Journalist Who Investigated Kickstarter’s Biggest European FailureIt all feels a bit otherworldly, but also very much with the times. Drones are part of our current cultural zeitgeist. Depending on who you ask, they’re either the future of delivery or a growing threat to our security. And now, there’s a league of professional drone pilots with custom LED lights that make the whole scene look pretty New-Agey and hip.The drone league is hardly just nerdtastic-cool, though. DRL has been backed by an eclectic handful of investors including RSE Ventures, CAA Ventures, Hearst Ventures, Muse singer Matthew Bellamy, Lux Capital, Courtside Ventures, and Gary Vaynerchuk, among others. DRL will make money the same way other competitive sports make money: sponsorships, media licensing and, potentially, down the road, live event tickets.Related: First Autonomous, Human-Sized Drone Revealed at CESIf it all still feels a bit confounding, have a looksee at the videos embedded below. Related: Drone Crashing From the Sky Misses World Champion Skier By a Sliver, Prompting Ban January 26, 2016 2 min read Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Nowcenter_img This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. The new software will simplify stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) planning for metastatic brain tumors and is the newest addition to the Elements A La Carte software portfolio. It was showcased at the 2014 annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Austin, Texas. The software is a work in progress and currently not for sale in the United States.“When a patient develops more than one metastasis in the brain, one of the best treatment options available – radiosurgery – becomes impractical because the treatment time increases at the same rate as the number of metastases,” said Stefan Vilsmeier, president and CEO at Brainlab. “With our new technology, we are poised as a company to shift the treatment paradigm and provide more treatment options and a consistent way to deliver them.”Brain metastases are the most common type of brain tumors, and the numbers continue to rise due to improved diagnostics and control of the primary disease. Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is still considered the standard of care; however it has been shown that WBRT can only prevent new tumors arising for a maximum of six months. There is clear recognition that not all patients with brain metastases have equivalently poor survival outcome, and a significant group lives for a longer period of time, prompting the debate regarding whether the patients in at least the best-prognosis category should be treated solely with more aggressive therapies upfront and keep WBRT as an option for later. Brainlab automatic brain metastases planning software brings to market technology that consistently and rapidly generates radiosurgery plans for the efficient treatment of multiple metastases.“The [software] enables a ‘monitor-unit,’ and time-efficient treatment planning and delivery, while reducing the dose to healthy brain tissue,” said Niko Papanikolaou, Ph.D., chief medical physicist, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. “This novel approach to the treatment of metastatic brain tumors from Brainlab can potentially benefit several patients that are currently receiving whole-brain radiation. We can now plan and treat metastatic brain cancer, for patients with larger volumes and higher number of metastases without the anticipated association of a decline in neurocognitive function.”Automatic brain metastases planning automatically selects a group of metastases in such a way that the multileaf collimator (MLC) fits to the shapes of these selected targets without leaving gaps. The algorithm generates an optimized volumetric conformal radiosurgery plan in a matter of minutes after all metastases have been outlined. With this new treatment concept, the software creates an optimized dose distribution no matter if one or ten metastases are being treated. For more information: www.brainlab.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Radiation Therapy | August 15, 2019 First Patient Enrolled in World’s Largest Brain Cancer Clinical Trial Henry Ford Cancer Institute is first-in-the-world to enroll a glioblastoma patient in the GBM AGILE Trial (Adaptive… read more News | Brachytherapy Systems | August 14, 2019 Efficacy of Isoray’s Cesium Blu Showcased in Recent Studies August 14, 2019 — Isoray announced a trio of studies recently reported at scientific meetings and published in medica read more News | Radiation Oncology | July 31, 2019 Laura Dawson, M.D., FASTRO, Chosen as ASTRO President-elect The members of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) elected four new officers to ASTRO’s Board of… read more The top piece of content in July was a video interview explaining how Princess Margaret Cancer Center is using machine learning to create automated treatment plans.
